The 2011-2012 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Recommendations for Influenza Vaccination
Key messages for this year include:
- Routine annual influenza vaccination continues to be recommended to all individuals age 6 months and older.
- Although influenza vaccine strains for the 2011-12 season are unchanged from those of 2010-11, annual vaccination is recommended even for those who received the vaccine for the previous season, to ensure adequate immunity.
- Children aged 6 months through 8 years should receive a second dose of vaccine if they did not receive at least one dose of seasonal influenza vaccine in the 2010-2011 season.
- A new intradermally administered TIV preparation, Fluzone Intradermal, is available for use in adults aged 18 through 64 years.
- Egg allergy is no longer considered a contraindication to vaccination, only a precaution. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to egg protein may be vaccinated by a healthcare provider familiar with the subject of egg allergy, after risk assessment.
Influenza vaccine may be ordered for VFC-eligible patients in New York City through the Citywide Immunization Registry. Click for details.
